Highlights From Previous Editions

The Sergiu Duca Symposium is an event created with the aim of promoting minimally invasive digestive surgery, by discussing the guidelines and techniques currently used and the progress made in this field. The first edition of this event, which intends to be an annual scientific meeting focused on different areas of interest, was held on December 7-10, 2022, with the theme of minimally invasive esophageal surgery. The symposium is named and dedicated in honor of Professor Sergiu Duca, considered the father of Romanian laparoscopic surgery, having many merits in the development of research, training and the implementation of innovative surgical techniques not only in Cluj-Napoca, but also at the national level.

The first edition of this symposium brought together world-renowned surgeons in esophageal surgery (Prof. Dr. Luigi Bonavina, Prof. Dr. Emanuele Asti, Prof. Dr. Mircea Chirică, Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Petar Simić, Prof. Dr. Ognjan Skrobić, Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Theodorou), together with local experts in esophageal diseases, from specialists in esophageal surgery (Prof. Dr. Nadim Al Hajjar, Asst. Prof. Dr. Călin Popa), to experienced gastroenterologists (Prof. Dr. Marcel Tanțau), but also doctors specialized in the oncological treatment of esophageal cancer (Prof. Dr. Calin Căinap, Prof. Dr. Gabriel Kacso).

This first event took place over a period of 4 days, bringing together a number of 93 participants from several university centers in the country. The first day was dedicated to the opening ceremony, followed by 2 days of conference, with the topics “Benign esophageal diseases”, respectively “Esophageal cancer”, and the last day of the event was reserved for a practical course entitled “Surgical treatment of hiatal hernias”. The practical course consisted of simulating intraoperative conditions by replicating the most common surgical techniques used in the treatment of hiatal hernias on experimental animals. Thus, the participants had the opportunity to learn the correct surgical technique, in real conditions, under the guidance of international experts.

The event received positive reviews from both participants and faculty members, encouraging its continuation and international collaborations. We are therefore excited to announce the second edition of the event and we invite you all to register for our event.
